What I do

I captain the Rocket Science Ship, aided and supported by a wonderful and passionate team who want to achieve social impact in all that we do. I lead on strategy and business development, focussing on innovating and new and better ways to do our work. I oversee the policies and processes in the organisation and involved in our projects as a critical friend or project director. As a lived experience leader and having followed an unconventional route into this sector I bring real-life experience, pragmatism and a commitment to the best do possible work for you, the people you support and society.

MY STORY

I joined in 2007, following three-years working for a research and tech firm in the North, where I lived for a while and honed my research and analysis skills. I established the first recruitment and training firm in regeneration back in 1998, working to provide staff to run complex socio-economic and regeneration projects across the country. I also set up a training business to help develop the skills and expertise to deliver regeneration and community projects. This followed six years in East London supporting socio-economic regeneration, skills policy and childcare provision. I have been working since 1983!

Areas of Expertise

  • Employment, skills and education is a key area of expertise and a creative mindset for innovation
  • Development of inclusive place-based strategies, funds, programmes and services, embedding social value and lived experience, that are designed with, by and for communities
  • Approaches to tackling poverty and financial exclusion through the lens of social determinants of health and early intervention

Approaches I use

  • Evaluation design, test and learn and insight gathering using community researchers, co-design approaches and storytelling
  • Understanding hidden needs and mismatches between policy intent and impact through mapping, local needs assessments and analyses
  • Listening and learning through lived experiences and ethnographic research using creative methods and building of power and confidence

Currently Passionate About

  • AI is a marmite subject for me. On one hand its potential to improve health and diagnosis but its impact on economies, peoples and society as we know it. I have completed a course with London Business School on appraising and understanding its limits and potential. The jury is out but I can help you consider the options and not lose humanity at the same time
  • Housing is a human right and without firm secure and affordable foundations how can we expect to live healthy and happy lives – the biggest policy issue we face
  • Always lifting and supporting single parents and their fight through life for themselves and their children and its forever impact on health and poverty

OUTSIDE OF WORK

I am a granny to two boys, a cat mum, fox rescuer and a soul-girl at heart. I have a passion for brit-funk and house music although not sure my knees can take the pace of clubbing any more. My guilty secret is watching Below Deck. I love Halloween and all things spooky.
