Inspiring Scotland: evaluation of the SOCAS fund 

Rocket Science UK Ltd is an independent research organisation. This privacy notice will explain how our organisation uses the personal data we collect from you or receive from our clients about you as part of our research and evaluation services.  

Rocket Science has been commissioned by Inspiring Scotland to conduct an evaluation of the funding that supports survivors.  

For the purposes of this project, Inspiring Scotland is the data controller and Rocket Science is the data processor. 

1. What data do we collect? 

The data we collect is tailored specifically to the evaluation we are undertaking. In deciding what data to collect we consider: 

  • What data we need in order to complete the project we are working on – this includes ensuring we are only collecting data we need and not collecting anything that isn’t needed. 
  • The consent we have obtained from you about what data to collect – this includes the consent that our clients have obtained from you before sharing their data with us.  

There are two types of data that we may collect as part of our research projects. The personal data that we may collect as part of our evaluation will include: 

  • First name, last name/surname, maiden name 
  • Email address 
  • Phone number 
  • Age  
  • IP address 
  • Postal code, city  
  • Phone number  

There is also another category of personal data called special personal data which we may collect including:  

  • Sex/Gender  
  • Race/Ethnicity  

2. How do we collect your data? 

Our evaluation is done on behalf of Inspiring Scotland and the Scottish Government. Some of the data we require for the evaluation is collected by us, and some of it is collected by the charities funded by Inspiring Scotland and provided to us so that we can use it in our evaluation.  

The data we collect from you will be through our field research – for example through: 

  • Interviews we conduct with you over the phone or in person 
  • Focus groups you participate in with us 
  • Surveys you complete or forms you fill in either online or on paper. 

For this particular piece of research, we will be collecting your data through: 

  • Interviews with staff and volunteers working in the charities supporting survivors  
  • Interviews or focus groups with survivors 
  • Surveys with survivors 
  • Surveys with staff and volunteers 
  • Interviews or focus groups with stakeholders who are interested in support available to survivors.   

3. How will we use your data? 

We collect your data so that we can: 

  • Use it to contact you to arrange a time to speak with us as part of our field research – e.g. through our interviews and focus groups 
  • Send you surveys via email 
  • Analyse your data to understand trends and outcomes for our research.  

The purpose of this particular evaluation is to understand survivors’ experience of support they accessed that has been funded by the Survivors of Childhood Abuse Support (SOCAS) fund, the impact these services have had  for survivors and identify what can be improved to improve outcomes for survivors.  

For this evaluation, we will only provide Inspiring Scotland and Scottish Government with aggregated analysis of survivors views. This means that your data will be added together with other people’s data to identify patterns in the data. You and your data won’t be identifiable in any way.  

4. Our legal basis for processing your data 

We require a legal basis to process your personal and sensitive data. The legal basis we will be using for this project is: 

  • Personal data: article 6 (f) Legitimate Interest  
  • Personal data: article 6 (a) Consent. 

5. How do we store your data? 

We store all your data on our cloud based shared filing system SharePoint. SharePoint is a Microsoft product attached to Office 365. All access to SharePoint is password protected. Any device with access to our SharePoint is also password protected and stored securely.  

Your data may be stored in our survey platform as well if we have collected your data through an online survey. The survey platform we use is Smart Survey. Smart Survey Privacy Statement can be found here. All data sent and stored over Smart Survey is encrypted and only able to be accessed by Rocket Science using our organisation specific log in details. Smart Survey will store all data in the United Kingdom.  

6. How long will we keep your data? 

We keep your personal data on file after the evaluation is complete to enable us to complete further processing should this be requested by the client as part of the contract we hold with them. We will not process your data without the requirements of this contract. We will delete your personal data once we are comfortable that it is no longer needed for the purposes for which it was processed.  

7. What are your data protection rights? 

We would like to make sure you are fully aware of all of your data protection rights. Every research participant is entitled to the following: 

  • The right to access – you have the right to request we provide copies of your personal data. We may charge you a small fee for this service 
  • The right to rectification – you have the right to request that we correct any information you believe is inaccurate. You also have the right to request we complete information you believe is incomplete 
  • The right to erasure – you have the right to request that we erase your personal data, under certain conditions 
  • The right to restrict processing – you have the right to request that we restrict the processing of your personal data, under certain conditions 
  • The right to object to processing – you have the right to object to us processing your personal data, under certain conditions 
  • The right to data portability – you have the right to request that we transfer the data that we have collected to another organisation, or directly to you, under certain conditions. 

If you make a request, we have one month to respond to you. If you would like to exercise any of these rights, please contact our Data Protection Officer.
