Launched on 01 October 2001, Rocket Science is an independent research and consultancy company with offices in London, Edinburgh and the North East.

We are committed to making a difference to the lives of people and communities across the UK by supporting national and local government, its agencies, charities and the voluntary sector to deliver and improve their services.

Since our inception we have worked with over 500 organisations using ‘rocket science’ to deliver practical solutions for complex problems.

Our values

Our values guide the way we work and the way we develop as a company. Rocket Scientists demonstrate commitment to our values and behave in ways that are consistent with our values:

  • Finding creative and practical solutions
  • Learning and sharing
  • Achieving excellence by offering a professional and efficient service
  • Working with clients rather than for clients
  • Investing in our people
  • Enjoying what we do

Our story

Rocket Science was founded in 2001 by Bob Forsyth, John Griffiths, Willy Roe and Richard Scothorne, operating in Edinburgh and London.

We wanted to create a rigorous and creative organisation that worked closely with clients to help them explore problems and implement effective solutions.  We grew rapidly, and by 2008 had 24 staff and an additional office in Newcastle.  We worked with UK Government Departments, Scottish Government, and a range of government agencies including Local Enterprise Companies in Scotland and Regional Development Agencies and regional Government Offices in England – and a lot of local authorities.  We had to stay light of our feet to respond to major changes in the structure of delivery and what clients are looking for.

We still have a strong focus on employability and skills, but we have moved into new areas such as health and social care, grant management, the role of third sector organisations, Business Improvement Districts and philanthropy, as well as working with a range of private sector clients and public/private partnerships and companies.

We pride ourselves on recruiting and supporting the development of outstanding staff and in 2016 we were recognised with a Silver IiP Award and a Silver Investor in Young People award.  If we look back to our founding days, much of our current client list would be unrecognisable – and we don’t expect this kind of dynamism to slow any time soon.
